Marietta farms over 400 acres of their own vines. They acquired them through some strange combination of chasing overheard stories, hunting and fishing, and buying grapes from outstanding farmers across two counties, constantly keeping an eye out for potential. After years of work and play, they owned gnarly, historic, semi-productive vineyards that needed care and attention. They have been happily investing time and energy dreaming about what they might become.
The wines of Old Vine Ranch represent an authentic blend of tradition and creative spirit. Building on the fifty-year legacy of Old Vine Red (one of the first wines I personally started buying on a consistent basis) each sip is a journey through California’s rich winemaking heritage. Carefully grown and crafted to be an easy indulgence and everyday celebration, these wines celebrate the fabulous diversity and quality of California’s vineyards.
The 2023 growing season was marked by a late start and relatively cool conditions, culminating in what many growers and vintners are hailing as a standout year for quality. Old Vine Cabernet Sauvignon is bold & rich with lovely notes of spice & oak wrapped around a core of black currant. It's plump, rich & fleshy with gobs of dark currant & black cherry fruit with accents of dark chocolate, tobacco, green peppercorn & spice. Remarkably deep for this price point & certainly ready to handle a steak, it's juicy enough for solo sipping or pairing with pizza. Easily one of our new favorite wines in the shop.
