Chaeau D Oupia Heretiques

Overview

Year in & year out, this is one of our favorite value bottles in the shop. You'd be hard pressed to spend $12 and get a better bottle. 90% Carignan/10% Syrah | The Carignan vines average 40 years in age, with some of them being up over 100 years old. The fruit is sustainably farmed and harvested partly by hand and partly by machine. Half of the Carignan is vinified traditionally--destemmed and fermented in used barrel and macerated with skins for 30 days--and half as whole clusters with carbonic maceration. Those wines are blended with the Syrah and aged in a combination of steel tank and neutral oak vats.

Château d'Oupia has produced the ideal bistro wine. Boasting a killer nose of spicy, brambly, wild raspberry, dark cherry, and earth, it’s pure, clean, and it just feels good drinking it. It’s not too heavy, but it’s certainly not light, and it’s fresh and easy to drink, with juicy acidity and low tannin. Dark, ruby-colored, the wine is wonderfully clean and pure, with an exuberant personality, and gobs of rich, peppery, red and black fruit.
