Villota Tinto Selvanevada Rioja

Overview

In 1973 The Villota family, in partnership with CVNE, established Viñedos de Contino, which was based on family land they had owned since the 1930s. In 2013 the Villotas sold 62 hectares of the vineyards and the winery to CVNE and launched their own bodega, drawing fruit from the 100 hectares of terraced vines that they retained after exiting their partnership. Located in Laserna, a small village located on the Ebro River in the municipality of Laguardia, in the province of Álava, Rioja Alavesa sub-zone, this is prime real estate, positioned as it is on a prized, south-facing curve of the Ebro river in Rioja Alavesa, with a mix of sand near the river and limestone on the upper slope. The first wines were from the 2016 vintage and they already show great promise.

Opaque violet. Deep-pitched cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of licorice, cola and candied flowers. Bitter cherry and blackberry flavors show good depth and turn livelier as the wine opens up. Closes long and spicy, with round, even tannins and a repeating cherry note. A traditional blend of 86% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano, 4% Mazuelo, 2% Garnacha.
