Vidigal is a family-owned winery that produces wines from all six of the top winemaking regions of Portugal. It was founded in 1960 but has roots that go well back into the 19th century. The man at the helm today is Antonio Mendes Lopez who, having spent many years in the wine business in Scandinavia, brings a somewhat different perspective to Portuguese wine and what can be achieved with modern style combined with tradition. A blend primarily of Tinto Roriz (70%) and Syrah (20%) with a little Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) added in, fermented in stainless steel and made in a decidedly international style, Reserva has a bright & juicy core of deep raspberry & plum fruits, with balanced acidity & finishes with savory spice & leather notes. It is a heck of a wine for $12 & an absolute steal at $10.
