A good way to get a feel for the quality of a producer in Burgundy is to taste their Bourgogne Rouge and one gets the feeling that Jose Maria Vicente, of Casa Castillo, feels the same way.
Bodegas Casa Castillo Monastrell is a fantastic wine from Spain's hottest estate for value in the sun-drenched, remote and rocky hills of Jumilla.The Jumilla from Casa Castillo is made from younger vines sourced mainly from La Valle vineyard where the soils are silty and the grapes have intense varietal expression. In previous years, there has been upwards of 20% Garnacha added to the blend but there was very little Garnacha in 2020, so this is 100% Monastrell. There are also more grapes from the older vines included in this spectacular vintage.
In the glass you’ll find a dark cherry red core that only subtly lightens up around the rim. The aromas are packed with dark fruits, leather and a touch of earth. This is loaded with all the dark fruits, plums, blackberries, dark cherries along w/ a gentle backdrop of rawhide and smoke. Medium-bodied on the palate, it is balanced & clean with lingering dark fruits & silky tannins.
